Representative Mike Garcia, a Republican from California’s 27th District, has a distinguished background in both military service and public office. Born in Granada Hills, California, Garcia grew up in Saugus and attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated near the top of his class with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Spanish. Garcia later earned a master’s degree in National Securities Studies from Georgetown University. His military career is notable for his role as an F/A-18 Super Hornet strike fighter pilot, during which he completed over 30 combat missions in Operation Iraqi Freedom and accumulated over 1,400 flight hours. After leaving active duty, he worked as an executive at Raytheon, where he helped grow the company and create hundreds of jobs.
Elected to Congress in a 2020 special election, Garcia is currently serving his second term. He focuses on issues like national security, military family support, and wildfire prevention, reflecting concerns relevant to his Southern California district. Recently, he introduced the Fire Weather Development Act to aid in predicting and mitigating wildfire threats, and he co-authored the Military Spouse Licensing Relief Act to ease licensing restrictions for military families. Garcia also serves on the House Committees on Appropriations, Intelligence, and Science, Space, and Technology, allowing him to address issues related to national defense, veterans’ affairs, and technological innovation.
